Regions, coasts and marinas - Seychelles (Indian Ocean)

Seychelles has some of the most beautiful islands in the Indian Ocean. Dazzling is a key word when one discovers the innumerable wonders of this country. The magnificence of its beaches and its lagoons, the extraordinary possibilities that it offers to the amateurs of scuba diving. Victoria, on the island of Mahe, is one of the smallest capitals in the world and the only major port in the Seychelles. But also the beach of Mahé, is one of the largest beaches of the country and certainly the most popular. Silhouette is a large granite island that rises about 20 kilometers from Mahé. Finally, Aldabra is one of the largest coral atolls on the planet.

The city of Port Victoria did not always call itself that. First Port-Royal then Establishment of the Roy, it will be baptized Port Victoria in honor of the Queen of England. It is the capital of the archipelago that since 1903 and is now home to almost a third of the population of Seychelles, ie about 25,000 inhabitants, it is also considered the smallest capital of the world. The island has been populated only since hardly more than 250 years the constructions are nevertheless recent and of the colonial type. The nerve center of the capital is the market right in the center of the city, there are local food products but also handicrafts. It is also in this historic center that one finds the most beautiful Creole houses. It is impossible to leave the city without having visited the botanical garden of Victoria spread over 6 hectares there are no less than a hundred species of the flora and fauna of the Seychelles.

The population is predominantly (80%) Catholic and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a jewel of architecture. The great avenues of the city seem to converge towards the Clock Tower, a sort of Big Ben miniature erected in 1903 in honor of Queen Victoria. Pretty creole houses and colonial-style palaces (such as the house of the Jivan family) surround this magnificent square and many avenues seem to converge towards it.

From the port of Victoria if you have rented a sailboat you can head towards Aldabra. You can also visit the Bel Air cemetery or the National Museum of Seychelles which tells the history of the archipelago since its discovery by the Portuguese in the 18th century, Hindu time or the botanical garden of Victoria. The city has been cradled in various cults and is home to several religious communities such as the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception for Catholics, St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral, Hindu Temple, Adventist Church. The market, or bazaar as it is nicknamed on the island, is the nerve center of the city, there are all the usual tropical products, from fruits to vegetables to spices or seafood ...
